The Demand for Hip And Knee Replacements for Baby Boomers is Rising Rapidly

Senior Man Trying To Sit DownAccording to statistics, an increasing number of men and women are having artificial joints to get rid of chronic pain.

If you are going to get a new hip or new knee next year, don’t worry, as you are not alone. These days, baby boomers, especially ones over the age of 50 are turning to hip and knee replacement centers for their joint replacement.

Each year, more than 500,000 people go for knee replacements and over 175,000 people need a hip replacement, and the numbers continue to increase at a staggering pace. As a matter of fact, hip replacements are believed to go up by nearly 174% in the following two decades, with knee replacements rising by an incredible 673%, based on a study results revealed at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ annual meeting in 2006.

Reasons behind the increasing demand for artificial joints

One of the main reasons behind it is the lifestyle of the baby boomers in the here and now, said Mathias Bostrom, an orthopedic surgeon at a hospital in New York. He performs total knee replacements.

“They don’t want to make changes to their lifestyles or be sedentary,” said Bostrom. “Their joints have gone through high wear and tear, and they are living longer; they want their joints to let them carry out all the activities they used to do.”

This means baby boomers between the ages of 45 and 65 are turning to joint replacement centers. You can see this trend in increasing rapidly in the USA and Canada.

Importance of joint replacement

Around 100 years back, probably people used to do a lot of manual work and worked their joints much more, but they did not live as long,” said Bostrom. Nowadays, we live longer, so we are actually demanding more from our joints; probably our joints are not designed to support our active bodies for so many years”.

If you go a few decades back, most of people with rheumatoid arthritis had joint replacement surgery; now, treatment for this disease has improved greatly. These days, among the main causes of osteoarthritis include body wear and tear and trauma. That’s why people are turning to doctors for joint replacements.

Aside from the above-mentioned reasons, there is another prominent reason behind the rising demand for this procedure: a large factor is, joint replacement surgeries are becoming better. According to Bostrom, it involves a big surgery and the artificial joints are not as reliable as the native ones. However, patients do well with the new joints, and the replacements stand the test of time, therefore, most of people, elect, to have this treatment to live and enjoy their lives to the fullest.

Reasons for higher demand for knee replacements

We don’t take care of our knees or joints for that matter, said Bostrom, while doctors have learned how to take due care of the hips. “Most research we have conducted on hips was because of not noticing early hip diseases in infancy, explained Bostrom. These days, we are able to diagnose hip dysplasia better; we don’t need to replace hips in as many cases as we did in the past.

On the other side, we have a tendency to beat up the knees much more than before. You can find loads of people out there with ligament tears and meniscal tears caused by athletic activities. Now, even if they get the damage treated, they are likely to have a problem in the long run.

Will there be enough artificial joints down the road?

Sadly, in the near future, there will be so many patients demanding joint replacements that the demand will outpace the supply. That doesn’t mean there will be a shortage of artificial devices; but there won’t be enough surgeons to perform the procedures. Few medical students are interested in orthopedic surgery and joint replacement, it isn’t a very popular subspecialty, said Bostrom. Most students have a tendency to go into sports and spine medicine, due to the lucrative opportunities of these specialties, he added. “It’s clear that there is going to be a shortage of qualified specialists for performing joint replacements in the not too distant future”.

If we take a look at the projected growth in this surgical treatment, we will come to realize that he is absolutely correct. Another research study presented results at the said meeting in 2006 involving a comparison between the number of qualified surgeons from 2010 and the number of expected surgeries by 2030. It discovered that the average yearly caseload would go up sharply.
