North Americans searching for affordable hip and knee replacements are choosing Costa Rica for surgery in record numbers

doctor and patientOrthopaedic surgery is progressively becoming an important aspect of healthcare for many North Americans thanks to their present lifestyle trends. Baby boomers growing to a very old age are on the increase. Despite their advancement in age, they seem adamant to maintain their usual lifestyle as it has always been. So the current scenario is that of men and women with squeaky, painful joints still putting their best foot forward to continue participating in strenuous sports activities and demanding physical engagements of everyday life. As a result, most elderly North Americans are resorting to hip and knee replacements in a bid to ensure their life remains more or less the same. Unfortunately, the cost of hip and knee replacement surgery at home is beyond affordable for the average North American.

Seeking alternatives, most of these people have resorted to medical tourism which holds a promising alternative to affordable orthopaedic surgery. More specifically, an increasing number of North Americans are finding their way to Costa Rica and if the cost of healthcare continues to skyrocket in the US, the number of people heading to Costa Rica is bound to grow exponentially. Generally, it has been expensive to get decent medical and surgical treatment at home as the majority of North Americans would testify to. The situation becomes even worse in the situation of hip and knee replacement surgery which many people do not receive insurance coverage from most insurance companies in the U.S. Moreover, the number of un-insured Americans is also going up and it is estimated that by 2015 a significant 25 percent of the population will still not be under medical insurance coverage as many have found it less expensive to pay the penalty and waive Obamacare.

The current prices of these surgeries are beyond the reach of the ordinary citizen. In fact, according to the Orthopaedic Network News, the cost of total hip implants for replacements has been on the rise by about 300 percent from 1998 to 2011. The average cost of a knee replacement in the U.S. is about $53,500. On the other hand, in Costa Rica, these procedures generally cost one-third of the entire cost of the same procedure in the U.S. The other reason why most North Americans are finding it convenient to cross their borders into Costa Rica is because of its proximity to the U.S. This proximity implies that travel costs will not be too pricey and it also means the flight will be short-which is preferable for most of the medical tourists.

Why does Costa Rica appeal to the majority of North Americans seeking affordable hip and knee replacements? Affordability of surgery is maintained without compromising on the quality of care. Actually, in most JCI Accredited health facilities in Costa Rica the quality is equal to or in some cases goes beyond that being offered in the U.S. and Canada.  The hospitals and clinics are also well equipped with state of the art medical equipment and are run by English-speaking doctors. These, coupled with the availability of excellent recovery centers and the opportunity for a great vacation are some of the basic reasons why the influx of North American medical tourists into Costa Rica is on the rise.
